Soil pH measures acidity/alkalinity on a 0-14 scale (7 is neutral). Most plants prefer 6.0-7.0. Wrong pH locks up nutrients even if they're present, causing poor growth despite fertilization.
How do I raise soil pH?
Add lime (calcium carbonate) to raise pH. Dolomitic lime adds magnesium too. Apply in fall, water in well, and avoid over-application. Results take 3-6 months.
How do I lower soil pH?
Add elemental sulfur or aluminum sulfate. Sulfur is slower but longer-lasting. Aluminum sulfate works faster but can build up. Retest after 3 months.
